THE ISSUE

It is surprisingly ironic.  Over the last five to ten years, American education has become intensely focused on the issue of student health and wellness, with a growing awareness of the connection between good physical and mental health and optimal academic performance outcomes. Yet hardly anyone has paid attention to a closely related and equally as critical health issue—the health and wellbeing of teachers.

To be sure, research and practice have proven that healthier students are better learners. And understandably, teachers have been pushed to the forefront of this progressive movement, as they are challenged with providing curricular programs and initiatives that foster student health.  Yet increasingly, these lead proponents of student health are finding their own wellbeing and performance consistently compromised by the mounting demands and stress of their jobs. What we hold true for the students should also hold true for teachers. 

Simply put, a focus on better health and wellbeing for both students and teachers equals better performance for everyone.  Healthy teachers, healthy students—the two are inseparable.

THE NEED

Until the complex and perilous issues impacting teacher health and wellbeing are realistically considered and addressed, the “healthier students-better outcomes” mission will remain fatally undermined from the start. Teachers are on the front lines of impacting students everyday, yet their need for proactive and sustained health and wellbeing support is greatly underserved. 

Reducing the impact of occupational and organizational stressors that siphon off teachers' energy, passion and job satisfaction is critical to creating teacher-friendly schools that optimize their talent, expertise and ability to dynamically impact student learning and achievement.
